In pairs, you are going to put together a portfolio of documents relating to the narrative.
(Week 1: 16-20th April) Chapter One:
Draw a diagram of Santiago Nasar's house. Show where he goes, what he does and says, to whom, and when, between getting up and leaving the house.
Draw a map of the town centre showing who says and does what, to/with whom, where and when, between Santiago leaving his house and Margot's mother receiving news of Santiago's death.
(Week 2: 23-27th April) Chapter Two:
Draw charts displaying information about Bayardo and Angela.
Draw a timeline showing the various activities of different people (who did what, where and when) during the course of the wedding celebrations.
(Week 3: 30th April-4th May) Chapter Three:
Do the Vicario brothers really intend to kill Santiago? Draw a table showing all the evidence for and against.
Draw a map/timeline showing the activities/movements of (a) the Vicario brothers and (b) other people.
(Week 4: 7-11th May) Chapter Four: Draw posters/charts to show what happens to each of the following after the 'death':
Santiago (pp.72-77) ... note the allusions to Jesus' death/sacrifice; its public and representative nature nature
Vicario brothers (and family) (pp.78-83) ... note the complementarity of the brothers; irony of family's shame despite the claim that this was an act of honour
Bayardo San Roman (pp.83-87) ... note the Biblical allusions and his silence
Angela Vicario (pp.87-95) ... emphasise her openness
people who seemed to suffer as a result of Santiago's death (pp.96-7)
people, and their reasons for not warning him, who watched Santiago as he walked from the dock with Cristo Bedoya (101-104)
2) Draw a map/timeline showing:
the activities/movements of Cristo after he separates from Santiago (pp.104-111)
the activities/movements of Santiago after he leaves Cristo until his death (pp.111-20)
(Week 6: 21-25th May) Interactive Oral:
Presentations on the following topics:
1) Gabriel Garcia Marquez, 'Magical Realism' and the 'Boom' in Latin American literature (Madhavika & Shanel)
2) Political and ethnic history of Colombia (Bryan, Jeena & Matthew)
3) Machismo, 'honour' and gender roles in Latin America (Racheed & Raizia)
4) Religion in Latin America (Gabrielle & Giovanni)
Each presentation should last no longer than 10 minutes; to be given on Friday 25th May.
